You may try Lazy Load plugin for that, instead of speeding up, the plugin only allow a browser to load the above fold content. The below fold content is only loaded once you scroll down. I am still trying to speed up my website. Need more options, minify and other things might actually break the js and css..

The above the fold part is probably one of the harder ones, as there is no cookie cutter formula I know of. But there are some great tips and tutorials online.
